Lubrication and Sealing Systems in Gearboxes

Gearboxes operate under continuous friction and load while transmitting high torque and power through gears and bearings. For this reason, lubrication and sealing are among the most critical factors that determine the service life of a gearbox. Without the right oil selection, regular lubrication, and effective sealing solutions, no gearbox can deliver maximum performance.

Lubrication and Sealing Systems

 Oil Types

Mineral Oils

Used in standard applications and offer an economical solution.

Synthetic Oils

Preferred for high temperatures, heavy loads, and long operating periods.

Food-Grade Oils (H1 Certified)

Provide safe use in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

 Sealing Systems:

Seal Systems

Radial Lip Seals: Prevent leakage by forming a thin oil film on the shaft surface.
Labyrinth Seals: Especially preferred in dusty environments and offer long service life.

Gaskets and O-Rings

Prevent oil leakage on assembly surfaces.
Materials with high chemical and temperature resistance should be selected.

Pressure Equalizers

Release internal pressure caused by heat buildup and prevent damage to the seals.

Maintenance and Inspection Recommendations

Be sure to check the oil level thoroughly and regularly before every maintenance operation.

Change the oil after the first 500 hours, then perform periodic changes according to the manufacturer’s recommendation.

Visually inspect seals and gaskets during every maintenance operation, and replace them if there is any deformation.

If the oil has darkened or contains metal particles, stop the system and carry out an inspection.

Remak Academy’s Comment:

“Proper lubrication and sealing are the quietly operating heart of a gearbox. A small oversight can lead to major failures; regular inspection and the right material selection are the guarantee of long service life.”
