Assembly and Alignment Techniques in Gearboxes

No matter how well a gearbox is manufactured, its service life will be shortened and its performance will decline if it is not installed correctly. Misaligned shafts accelerate gear wear and cause bearing failures, vibration, and energy loss. For this reason, the steps applied during gearbox installation and precise alignment procedures are critically important for reliable operation.

Assembly Steps

Housing Positioning

The gearbox should be fixed on a solid and vibration-free base.

The mounting surfaces should be smooth and properly leveled.

Shaft Connections

Coupling or pulley connections should be installed with the appropriate tightening torque.

Impact mounting should be avoided; if pressing is required, it should be done in a controlled manner.

Fastening Elements

Bolts and nuts should be tightened to the torque values specified by the manufacturer.

Lock washers, retaining rings, or taper locks must be used.

Oil Filling

After assembly, the gearbox should be filled with oil in the amount and viscosity recommended by the manufacturer.

Visual Alignment (Rough)

At the initial installation stage, the shaft axes are aligned roughly.

Using a Straightedge and Feeler Gauge

Provides quick inspection in small systems.

Using a Caliper or Dial Indicator

The shaft axes are adjusted by taking more precise measurements.

Using a Laser Alignment Device

Shafts and couplings are aligned with micron-level precision.

Tolerances

When misalignment exceeds 0.05 mm, the service life of bearings and couplings is significantly reduced.
